During mammalian evolution nourishment of the young changed from egg yolk to milk provided by the mother.
The illustration shows an egg (egg yolk) and milk, as well as a virtual pseudogene sequence. This is to illustrate the loss (pseudogenization) of egg yolk genes during mammalian evolution due to the emergence of alternative nourishment resources (lactation and placentation) (see Brawand et al., page e63).
