The health, wellbeing and development of children and adolescents is fundamental to human societies and their future prospects, worldwide. In many settings, however, major threats to child health are evident, ranging from poverty and undernutrition to the adverse impacts of conflict and climate change. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to have serious impacts on education and other services for children. A Special Issue of PLOS Medicine is devoted to the theme of child and adolescent health and, in an Editorial, guest editors Zulfiqar Bhutta, Kathryn Yount and Quique Bassat, along with journal editor Caitlin Moyer, discuss the aims and content of the issue.
