In an Editorial published to coincide with World AIDS Day on December 1, Guest Editors Steven Deeks, Sharon Lewin and Linda-Gail Bekker discuss PLOS Medicine's Special Issue on Advances in HIV Prevention, Treatment and Cure. With global targets seeking to achieve an end to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the authors describe some barriers that may prevent this from being achieved and highlight published research studies and discussion pieces that could illustrate paths to overcoming some of the ongoing challenges.
