Fell ponies have played a pivotal role as working animals in the agricultural and industrial development of northern England, and today are valued as versatile family ponies around the UK and also overseas. However, their survival has been threatened in recent years by a fatal recessive disease that causes immune deficiency and progressive anemia. Using an equine SNP array followed by resequencing of the critical interval, Fox-Clipsham et al. mapped the defect and enabled the development of a diagnostic test for carriers and affected foals.
