Valve cells are crucial for efficient cardiac performance in Drosophila
Hemolymph flow in Drosophila wildtype and valve mutant animals is visualized by dye injection angiography. Wildtypic valves are highly deformable and open the heart lumen, allowing unobstructed flow. In contrast, in mutants affecting valve morphology the heart lumen is narrow and flow is obstructed. Higher streaming velocities are present upon valve damage. See Meyer et al.
