DEFECTIVE EMBRYO AND MERISTEMS (DEM) genes are essential for cell division and gamete viability in Arabidopsis

In dem mutants, chromosomes fail to align on the metaphase plate at meiosis II and result in aberrant numbers of daughter cells following meiosis. The image shows an excess of DAPI-stained meiotic products (i.e., five instead of four daughter cells) in a dem mutant. See Lee et al.
