Human skin and eye color: putting the pieces together

Cape Verde is an archipelago located off the West African coast that was found uninhabited by the Portuguese in the middle of the 15th century. Its unique settlement process gave rise to extensive genetic mixing between individuals of European and West African origin, reflected in the broad spectrum of morphologic variation observed today. In this issue, Beleza and colleagues use these unique properties of Cape Verde to study the genetic basis of skin and eye color variation in human populations.
