Infectious diseases like malaria are major causes of morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. These microbes are able to rapidly evolve resistance to the drug treatments we develop, threatening our ability to treat these diseases, and placing millions at great risk (see Van Tyne et al.).
