Horowitz, H, P Thorburn and JE Haber (1984) Rearrangements of highly polymorphic regions near telomeres of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. MCB 4(11):2509-17.
This paper anticipates the conclusion of the authors that in meiosis only subtelomeric regions exhibit rearrangements.

Dear PLoS Genetics,

When we wrote our paper we did not at the time think that the telomere instability phenotype observed in our mutation accumulation experiments (both in the vegetative and meiotic lines) was a novel observation (see cited Ref. 54-57 in our paper). We agree that Horowitz et al. (1984) describe the instability of telomere sequences in meiosis (reviewed in Ref. 54) and would have more explicitly cited the paper if we were aware of it. We apologize for this oversight.

Below is our e-mail exchange between Eric Alani and Jim Haber to resolve the issue:

From Eric Alani to Jim Haber: I now looked at your paper and see your Figure 6-spore progeny from an isogenic diploid. Yes, I see that you found changes in the Y-homologous fragment. I agree that your paper indicates subtelomeric rearrangements occur during meiosis (again I'm sorry that we missed citing it) but it doesn't seem to argue that the rest of the genome is stable as I interpret from your note. Am I missing something or is this just a wording issue?

From Jim Haber to Eric Alani: No, you are right. We didn't have any evidence about the rest of the genome and I wasn't suggesting otherwise, but we did show 30 years ago (!) that the ends were subject to frequent rearrangements.
