Osteoarthritis of the knee is an extremely common and debilitating condition that affects a significant proportion of the world’s population over the age of 40. A hallmark of the disease is pain and its effect on joint function. Resveratrol, a plant-derived compound, is currently available over-the-counter as an oral supplement in many countries. Existing data suggests that this could provide a promising new pharmacological treatment for people with knee osteoarthritis, but further trials are required to support its use. In this study, Christelle Nguyen and colleagues evaluate the effectiveness of a patented formulation of resveratrol in improving chronic pain levels by comparing it to placebo in a double-blind, randomized, Phase 3 clinical trial conducted in 3 tertiary care centres across France.
