The severe toll of morbidity and mortality wrought by SARS-CoV-2 infections, accompanied by very substantial indirect individual and societal impacts, have been felt worldwide since early 2020. Intensive scientific and medical progress has led to development of effective vaccines and other medical interventions, however, and these advances promise to protect and mitigate against further adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. But when will these potential benefits be available worldwide, for all populations and in all countries? In an Editorial, the PLOS Medicine editors discuss the importance of global COVID-19 vaccine equity and describe some of the challenges to achieving it.
