The COVID-19 pandemic has wrought an enormous toll of ill health and mortality on the world's population, and transformed the lives of many. Broader consequences in terms of the serious disruptions to medical care, education, economic activity and other fundamental societal functions are already evident in many countries, and the thoughts of researchers, policy makers and others are turning to the task of rebuilding and reimagining prospects for medicine and global health post-pandemic. In this month's Editorial, Michael Reid and co-authors introduce a Collection on global health in the post-COVID-19 era, discussing key topics including the path to universal health coverage and strengthening preparations for future pandemics.
