Toxoplasma gondii is a single-celled parasite that grows inside a specialised vacuole compartment within a host cell. This vacuole is protected from host innate immune responses by parasite effector proteins that are secreted into the host cell. This image shows T. gondii parasites expressing mCherry (yellow) growing inside murine bone marrow-derived macrophages stained with CellMask (magenta) and DAPI (blue). Thousands of such images are taken and used to quantify the resistance of different strains of T. gondii to clearance by the host cell. Butterworth et al. 2022
