PLoS Pathogens Issue Image | Vol. 7(9) September 2011

Yeast and filamentous forms of the maize pathogen Ustilago maydis.

U. maydis is a basidiomycete dimorphic phytopathogen that grows as yeast-like cells on rich media cultures and is able to grow in a polarized manner under specific conditions such as charcoal-containing media or on the maize surface. This morphological transition is essential for its virulence capacity, as occurs in many other fungal pathogens. The general transcriptional repressor Tup1 is required for this process. The image shows a mixture of wild-type YFP labeled cells (yellow, filamentous) co-inoculated with a tup1 CFP mutant strain (cyan, yeast) on charcoal-containing media (see Elías-Villalobos et al., doi: 10.1371/journal. ppat.1002235).
