Designing an ecosystem sentinel framework for viral surveillance using army ants (created with Biorender).

To characterise the virosphere and monitor specific viral diseases within a particular context, an ecosystem and sentinel species are first identified to establish the ecosystem sentinel framework. The selection of species is based on its ecology and interactions with the targeted viruses to improve detection. A sampling strategy is then designed, and various molecular techniques are used to analyse the sentinel virome.
