In a certain sense this is true. However, the novelty of this observation is tempered by an earlier report from Guan et al entitled “Self-protection of individual CD4+ T cells against R5 HIV-1 infection by the synthesis of anti-viral CCR5 ligands” (PLoS One. 2008;3(10):e3481). This study from 2008 clearly showed that primary T cells are capable of antigen-specific and antigen-driven “autoprotection” from R5 HIV infection as a consequence of their secreting CCR5-binding chemokines. The results reported in the current paper are predicted by and consistent with the conclusions drawn from the earlier study.
