More than 20 million people are infected with Loa loa, and around 40 million live in high or intermediate-risk areas in West- and Central Africa. In studying perception of loiasis in a highly affected area in rural Gabon, Hildebrandt et al find that communities are aware of the disease but that gaps in knowledge exist regarding the mode of transmission. The available healthcare system does not seem to provide adequate management for loiasis in this region.
