Jars of Ascaris lumbricoides

Numerous analyses have found that people infected with roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) are predisposed to harbor either many or few worms. Members of the same household also tend to harbor similar numbers of worms. This image shows 2,269 roundworms worms collected from 114 people in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The study (see Walker et al., doi:10.1371/journal.pntd.0001047) analyzed worm count data before and after treatment to determine whether household has any effect on worm count.
