Russia's 'special military operation' in Ukraine, launched at the end of February 2022, has led to dramatic and shocking destruction and loss of life, and caused the movement of enormous numbers of refugees out of and within the country. The political, economic and security maps of Europe have been redrawn in a remarkably short period of time, with established relationships and certainties being disrupted and re-evaluated on an almost daily basis. In an Editorial, the PLOS Medicine editors discuss the threats to civilian lives and health in the Ukraine conflict, and call for stronger efforts in diplomacy and conflict prevention.
