Early diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection is a global health priority, especially in eastern and southern Africa where a substantial proportion of those living with HIV reside. Yet serious challenges to service provision have been posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other adverse factors, leading UNAIDS to warn in 2022 that the response to HIV/AIDS is ‘in danger’ despite the availability of proven approaches to prevention, testing and treatment. In a Policy Forum, Anna Grimsrud and co-authors discuss priorities for future provision of HIV testing and other services in eastern and southern Africa.
