PLoS Medicine Issue Image | Vol. 19(7) August 2022

The recent decision by the Unites States Supreme Court to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling leaves many women and girls without the right to obtain abortion care. This abrupt reversal of a policy that was established nearly 50 years ago will exacerbate an increasingly bleak picture of maternal health in the US. Restrictive policies or outright bans on abortion services represent a threat to the health of women worldwide and the Supreme Court's decision should serve to amplify the global call for strategies to mitigate the inevitable repercussions for women's health. In an editorial, the PLOS Medicine editors discuss the implications, for women globally, of restricting access to abortion care.
