Ethics Without Borders

The image this month relates to the Editorial and a paper by Doris Schopper and colleagues. The Editorial discusses the problems that can arise when research is done in the context of humanitarian relief work and notes that ethical oversight of such research needs to be rigorous, but also pragmatic. It discusses particularly the role of journals when papers arising from such research are submitted for publication. The article by Schopper and colleagues describes the functioning of the Médecins Sans Frontières independent ethics review board and the framework used for ethics review by this board, and discusses challenging ethical issues encountered by the board since its inception.
