Retinal microaneurysms (MAs) are one of the earliest clinically visible signs of diabetic retinopathy (DR). MA leakage or rupture may precipitate local pathology in the surrounding neural retina that impacts visual function. In this work, the authors perform computational modeling of blood cell transport in microvessels containing various MAs, a process that is very difficult to observe directly in vivo. The simulation results provide quantitative assessments of the impacts of MA morphology, microvascular hematocrit, hemodynamics and blood cell biomechanics on the perfusion status of MA lumen and unravel the mechanisms underlying the MA rupture and thrombosis in DR.
