An example of a figure that was used in a project handbook to improve understanding of a detailed protocol for attaching leg bands to nestlings of the Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus).
The study required that unique combinations of metal and colored leg bands to be attached for individual identification after capture, and this diagram was developed to avoid confusion over which leg was being referenced when describing band attachment. In this case, the diagram also served to emphasize the important point that only females should have striped leg bands, which further facilitates identification of sexes under field conditions.
