(a) A neuron T embedded in . The root of T, representing the soma, is located at the center of the disk. The concentric circles, centered at the root, are determined by the branch points they go through at distances r1, …, r8 from the soma. At radius r, the Sholl function ϕT (b) counts the number of nodes in a ball or a radius r centered at the root.
