(A) The stimulus is convolved with two mono-lobed filters to produce the signals and . These yield the neural response according to Eq. (2). The non-linear term in the equations, which involves the signal , modulates gain (related to the area under the red curve) and time scale (related to the width of the red curve) in a history-dependent manner. Time scale and gain thus vary together, with small gains associated with short time scales and large gains associated with long time scales. (B) The filter is broader than the filter and, hence, can capture memory effects and mimic feedback. The parameter set is based upon the salamander data (see Methods and Table 2).
