Because the angular variability has a fixed value for each barrel, the induced horizontal variability increases with distance from the barrel center. This is illustrated by the horizontal axis of the error ellipses. This error is smaller than the variability along rows and arcs between animals (D), and thus negligible at the BT and BB.
