Please note that the model presented allows movement of individuals from the 'recovered' class back into the 'susceptible' class. The model is referred to as an SIR model because the replenishment of susceptibles may be interpreted not only as occurring through individual loss of immunity but alternatively as an immigration/emigration or birth/death process, with inputs exactly balancing outputs. The model can also be appropriately referred to as an SIRS model, which may be preferable, as it emphasizes the replenishment of the susceptible population.
