Luise lives in the village of Baume near the city of Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She and her husband are both blind from onchocerciasis – Luise remembers only taking ivermectin once and feeling very sick afterwards. “We are both afraid of the side effects so we didn’t take the drug,” she said, speaking about mass distribution of ivermectin. “People told us that the drugs could have bad side effects and most people in our village don’t take the drugs when the distributors come around.” Alami et al 2023
