Mr. Chlorine, a cartoon character developed during the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone

Fear of chlorine emerged as a serious challenge during the 2014-2015 West African Ebola outbreak. Ironically, an intervention designed to protect was perceived by some people as being part of the problem: the chlorine used to disinfect ambulances was, they believed, killing patients being carried to treatment centres. This fear acted as a significant barrier that stopped people going for treatment if they fell ill, so Mr. Chlorine was developed in order to present chlorine as a friendly and safe support in the fight against Ebola: "I am your friend, Mr. Chlorine. I will help you fight Ebola." Kinsman et al.
