Looking down, looking up

Neighborhood children taking respite in the quiet, peaceful courtyard of Igreja da Penha, a church atop a hill overlooking a sprawling favela community in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the distance is an aerial lift spanning Complexo Alemao, a large slum community once occupied by the Brazilian military in its anti-gang operation. First of its kind in Brazil, the aerial lift was inaugurated in 2011 and was designed to transport about 30,000 people per day, reducing a commute time of more than 1 hour to less than 20 minutes. In 2016, its operation was suspended by the State of Rio de Janeiro due to lack of funds. Faria et al.
