Figures
Banks of river Mandoul in southern Chad.
This area is one of the main sleeping sickness foci, and river habitats like the one pictured are infested with tsetse-flies which transmit sleeping sickness to people. The blue and back material in the bottom right corner is called a 'tiny target' and is impregnated with insecticide; tsetse are attracted by its bright blue colour. Tiny targets were deployed to kill tsetse and protect local communities that access rivers during their day to day activities. Kovacic et al.
