Lines are linear trendlines calculated separately for each level of political identity. If political ideology had the same meaning regardless of location the trendlines would be flat.

County blueness is divided into quartiles for visualization purposes, but was treated as a continuous variable in all analyses. If political ideology had the same meaning regardless of location all bars of the same color would be the same height.
