The tree is based on 16S rDNA, gyrB and recA data. Numbers on branches represent Bayesian posterior probabilities and maximum parsimony bootstrap support. Gousiekte-inducing plants are indicated in grey boxes. Numbers between brackets correspond to the numbers in Table S1.

Adapted phylogenetic tree of the plant family Rubiaceae [36].

The gousiekte-inducing plants are part of the subfamily Ixoroideae, one of the three subfamilies in Rubiaceae. Nevertheless, they are not closely related as they belong to different tribes: Fadogia and Vangueria belong to Vanguerieae, while Pavetta belongs to Pavetteae. The respective tribes are indicated in capital letters.
