The graph shows the CCEmin in young (black bars) and old subjects (grey bars) during wake (W) and different sleep stages (S1-2, S3-4, REM). In the young subjects, no differences of CCEmin were observed between the sleep stages. Compared to young, the old group showed a significantly lower CCEmin in W, S1-2 and REM. In the old participants, CCEmin was significantly reduced during REM sleep compared to S1-2, S3-4 and W.
