This article makes me think of schema theory. I believe the work of the Russian music theorist Yuri Nikolaevic Tiulin would be of interest do you, particularly his concept of "lad" - system of tonal attractors. I found this work has important implications for the evolution of musical systems, but also for language cognition in general. Highly interesting!
