As well as thanking the authors for this very interesting paper, I would like to direct readers to a 2011 review which provides a different viewpoint:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1109...
which is arXiv paper 1109.2076
"Escalation, timing and severity of insurgent and terrorist events: Toward a unified theory of future threats".

We thank Prof. Johnson for his comment, and note that we both cite and discuss his primary work in this area.
For the interested reader, we recommend re-reading our Discussion section, which specifically addresses both the range of plausible social mechanisms and their current status with respect to empirical data.
