This interesting study shows that the length of the nasal cavity of all extant hominids (Pan, H.sapiens & Gorilla) is comparable. However, (1) "it only analyzed the length of the nose, which excludes other elements of the nasal form lateral to the mid-sagittal plane", (2) it doesn't explain why archaic Homo (erectus & neanderth.) had receding foreheads & chins, but projecting mid-faces & (at least neandertals, less certain in erectus) remarkably large noses (e.g. already C.S.Coon 1954 "The Story of Man" Knopf NY). In my opinion, this can easily be explained by comparative biology, e.g. google "Oi, big nose!" (New Scientist 2782:69, 2010).
