Reducing the Noise - Ernest Greene, Academic Editor

Posted by egreene on 14 Mar 2008 at 17:10 GMT

Heart-beat and breathing can significantly interfere with recording of fMRI signals from the brain, making it difficult to get clear measures of regional differences in activity. These investigators have developed and thoroughly evaluated methods for identifying these sources of noise and extracting them from the fMRI images. In addition to providing a clear report of their findings, they make available the essential algorithms as an open-source software package that is freely available for download. Their contribution should be especially useful for the improving temporal resolution of fMRI work, which should contribute to the quality of this research and accelerate the rate at which insights are provided.
