Plasma or serum NGAL?

Posted by luttenthal on 23 Apr 2017 at 05:03 GMT

The authors describe the measurement of NGAL in EDTA-plasma samples but then refer to the results as "serum NGAL". This appears to be incorrect and potentially misleading, even if this imprecise terminology is quite common medical jargon. The matter is significant, because NGAL levels in EDTA-plasma are typically lower than in serum. EDTA inhibits the calcium-dependent release of NGAL from neutrophils during the preparation of plasma, whereas some additional NGAL is released from the neutrophils when preparing serum. Measuring NGAL in EDTA-plasma seeks minimize the contribution from neutrophilic inflammation, while serum NGAL values may reflect the NGAL released from both organs and neutrophils.
