N versus P limitation and cell death

A nice piece of work.

In my work with Paul Falkowski, I found no evidence that N-deprivation induced a cell death response in either T. weissflogii or Dunaliella tertiolecta (though ironically, we are often mis-cited as showing this!).
Corina Brussaard found that in Ditylum brightwellii, P-dervivation did result in cell death.

Corina and I speculated that a N-limited cell might not be able to synthesize the proteins necessary to activate a cell death pathway...while a P-limited one would. This is probably going to depend on whether there are organic P sources present. Contrasts between chronically and severely P-limited freshwater and marine species might be nice experimental model...
