Terrain Ruggedness

I am having a difficult time understanding your term "terrain ruggedness". In reading through the article, I perhaps have missed it, but cannot determine the definition. This is the closest I could find in terms of explanation "We assigned to each GPS relocation the values of three response variables: terrain ruggedness (from digital elevation models with 30 × 30m resolution".
So, I am interested in understanding what information is displayed when terrain ruggedness is shown in meters. Is it simply an elevation? If so, how does that correspond to ruggedness?

Hi Mr Nichols, Terrain ruggedness is a measure how much difference there is in elevation between adjescent pixels, basically the pixel is compared to its 8 neighbours. Hence on steep slopes its closely related to elevation, but on high plateaus for example, it is not. Sorry if that was unclear.

Thank you Henrik. That was helpful. Since your paper was linked to a large news depository site, you probably received larger exposure than you might normally for such a specialized field. Perhaps the term is quite common among your specialty area, but since mine is outside of that, it is helpful to understand some of the graphs that simply display a number (in meters).

However, although I am biologist my curiosity was tied more into my hunting interests. Now that I understand the term a bit better, I can contemplate the implications of your methodology and the ramifications of elk hunter/prey relationships.

In any case, it is a fascinating study and the results are quite remarkable, particularly with respect to hunting season and harvesting methods.
