Inhibitors of succinate dehydrogenase

Posted by hsavnt on 07 May 2012 at 07:07 GMT

Dear Editor,

I have read with the greatest interest the innovative study on a new class of inhibitors of the succinate dehydrogenase activity.

The classical exogenous inhibitors include 3-nitropropionic acid, interestingly a fungal toxin, malonate and alkoxy acetic acids (ethylene glycol ether metabolites). They are all fairly toxic in animal models in which they cause mitochondrial damage which in turn can e.g. trigger apoptosis.

Mitochondrial mechanisms can also play central roles in the epigenetic pathways leading to malignant transformation.

Thus, adding new tools to inhibitor studies opens up new views and possibilities.
