Several specimens attributed to Shastasaurus by Sander et al. 2011 may not be monophyletic.

The Sander et al. phylogenetic analysis nested the three putative Shastasaurus specimens together despite their apparent differences. I tested these nestings with an independent list of 228 character traits and found the UCMP 9017 specimen (the holotype) nested with S. alexandrae in a very basal position basal to hupesuchids. The others nested elsewhere. The YGMR SPC V3108 specimen nested with Mikadocephalus. The YGMR SPC V3107 specimen nested with Cymbodpondylus and Shonisaurus (Shastasaurus) sikanniensis.
