Binding stoichiometries much less than 1

The number of binding sites for alkanolamine (0.197) was smaller compared to that for the iminium (0.298).

I am surprised the authors do not discuss the calculated binding stoichiometry in more detail. The fact that only 1 alkanolamine binds per 5 BSA molecules is, to say the least, rather odd. What could be the cause of this?
