Metformin and vitamin-B12

Posted by vnalluri7 on 21 Nov 2011 at 10:31 GMT

As it is the prevalence of vitamin-B12 in normal individuals in this study is about 40% and the prevalence of B-12 is further higher (about 55%) in diabetes subjects without retinopathy. Interestingly the prevalence was astonishingly high (67%) in diabetic retinopathy patients. Unless, Metformin users were present exclusively in Diabetic Retinopathy group, reduction in Vitamin B12 does signify the association of vitamin-B12 deficiency with diabetic retinopathy. In any case it is an association study and a mechanistic role of vitamin-B12 in diabetic retinopathy needs to be established. Nevertheless it is an interesting observational study that provided a clue on vitamin-B12 and diabetic retinopathy
