This is an interesting paper, which, however, may leave the false impression of being the first study which identified and analyzed the Fur-like protein Mgr_1314 in Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense. A very similar study on the same Fur protein in the same bacterial strain was already published before (Uebe et al. 2010. Deletion of a fur-like gene affects iron homeostasis and magnetosome formation in Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense. J. Bacteriol. 192: 4192-4204), which, however, is only briefly mentioned in the work of Qi et al. Since both studies used an overlapping and partially identical approach, it would have been interesting to learn whether similar experiments, such as the bioinformatic analyses, complementation studies, analyses of iron accumulation etc. performed by Qi et al. confirmed the main conclusions of the previous study (which after reading both papers seems to be the case). Although we have no doubt that both studies were performed independently, it would have been useful to refer to the earlier work by Uebe et al. (2010) in more detail.
