Unraveling the mechanism responsible for the GC enrichment of organelle genomes might in turn help explain the near-ubiquity of AT-rich mitochondrial and plastid DNAs throughout the eukaryotic domain, a feature that is poorly understood but probably linked to AT mutation pressure [10], [11].
