My theory of crypsis for Zebra stripes

Posted by darkgemini6 on 23 Jan 2016 at 01:34 GMT

Myself believe that the striping is still a crypsis effect for zebras but not the given tree and light idea or breaking outline idea.I propose it is very simply for the optical illusion effect.Being that zebras are herd animals that tend to be packed together. Now to enhance the strength in numbers the white and black stripes make it difficult to tell where one zebra begins and the other ends.Being that it's black and white branding with varying widths this gives an optical illusion of continuous object and also makes it difficult to tell the exact distance to said objects.Similar to the "cafe wall illusion" http://www.richardgregory... .

I believe this is correct. And perhaps there is another factor: even if a predator is persecuting one zebra away of other species, twinkling of zebra's stripes makes the predator feel so uncomfortable, that it chooses to quit. I used to feel like that when looking at a person dressed in striped clothes.
