Christian Hardtke (University of Lausanne, Switzerland) has recently evaluated and endorsed this article at Faculty of 1000 Biology. His comments are as under:

"Strikingly, this study provides evidence that the human pathogen Salmonella is also an endopathogen of Arabidopsis, and likely other plants as well. The authors demonstrate that Salmonella typhimurium can enter Arabidopsis cells and overcome the host immune response to persist in the plant. Notably, for invasion, Salmonella takes advantage of structural weaknesses in the plant, such as wounds caused by insect attack. The results also suggest that endopathogenic Salmonella may be the major agent of food poisoning caused by raw fruits and vegetables. So, simply washing your salad might not help, especially if it was grown by organic agriculture..."
